The Diagnosis

Turning high-intent colour searches into a larger acquisition opportunity for PaintNuts

NutsGroup, the leading challenger brand behind PaintNuts, runs a leading automotive e-commerce platform. They make it easy for DIY and classic car owners to find precision colour-match paint and repair solutions, fast.

PaintNuts already performed strongly in organic search. The brand had an established SEO base and strong visibility across many product-led terms. The opportunity sat one level higher in the customer journey. People were searching for colour-led terms such as “blue car paint” or “ford white paint”, but those searches did not usually match an exact product shade or product name. The intent was exploratory; users wanted to find the right shade, not just order blind. We needed pages that could rank for these terms while actually guiding that decision.

That created a gap. These users had clear buying intent, but they were still exploring their options. They knew the brand or colour family they needed, but they had not yet narrowed the search to a specific paint code or product page. Competitors were already appearing on page one for some of these terms, so PaintNuts needed to compete in that space to protect and grow visibility.

Door4 needed to help PaintNuts capture more high-intent organic demand, expand its keyword footprint, strengthen topical authority around paint colours, and support downstream conversions. The project also needed to create a structure that could grow over time across more brands, more colours, and more search opportunities.

The Approach

Building a scalable colour search strategy around real customer demand

Door4 started with the commercial search opportunity. We reviewed competitor performance, assessed keyword demand, and identified where brand and colour searches were being missed. The aim was to build on PaintNuts’ existing SEO strength, rather than replace what was already working.

The strategy focused on creating a better match between what customers searched for and the pages they landed on. Broad colour searches and brand-colour combinations needed clear, relevant landing pages that could help users move from research to purchase. That meant structuring content around base colours, brands, and specific colour names in a way that search engines and customers could both understand.

We also planned for scale from the start. The dataset was large and complex, so a manual page-by-page process would have slowed delivery and increased risk. Door4 used AI to support data structuring, hex code generation, headers, metadata, and content creation at scale. Human QA remained central. We validated outputs, checked consistency, and made sure the work met technical, brand, and SEO standards before launch.

The Execution

Combining structured data, technical SEO and content to launch at scale

Door4 led the project end-to-end, covering strategy, data management, content creation, page development, technical coordination, and performance tracking. We organised existing and new colour data by brand, aligned hex codes with colour names, and created a clear structure for base colour pages and brand-specific product detail pages.

The content work covered H1s, metadata, page copy, and FAQs for each base colour page. Each element had a job to do. Headers and metadata improved search relevance. Page content helped customers understand their options. FAQs strengthened the usefulness of the pages and supported long-tail search visibility.

Technical SEO changes were also central to delivery. We optimised URL structures, improved page hierarchy, and aligned landing pages with search intent. Door4 created detailed development briefs to support efficient mass data uploads, reducing friction and helping the project move at speed.

The project remains live. Highest-priority brands have been completed, and PaintNuts has now moved into the next batch. This staged rollout keeps momentum high while allowing Door4 to monitor ranking gains and optimise as the footprint expands.

The Success Criteria

Measuring success through rankings, visibility, relevance and revenue impact

Success was measured through clear commercial and search performance indicators. The first priority was ranking improvement for high-volume brand and colour queries. Door4 tracked keyword visibility to understand whether the new structure was helping PaintNuts compete for searches that had previously been unranked or buried on later pages.

The second measure was relevance. The pages needed to match customer intent more closely than generic brand or product pages. That mattered for organic performance and also created a better paid media opportunity.

The third measure was commercial impact. Door4 assessed how the new pages supported conversions and paid search efficiency. The colour-led PPC activity increased conversion rates by 15% compared with the generic brand campaign and delivered an uplift equivalent to around 12.5% of the original campaign’s monthly revenue.

The Conclusion

A larger search footprint and a repeatable model for continued growth

PaintNuts now has a stronger route into colour-led search demand. The site ranks on page one for valuable queries and many moved into top-three positions.
The commercial value goes beyond rankings. PaintNuts can now meet customers earlier in the buying journey, guide them through colour choice, and move them towards conversion with more relevant landing pages. Paid search has also benefited, using the SEO-created pages to improve landing page relevance and conversion rates.

We found the biggest takeaway is that when search structure reflects how customers actually shop, performance improves across channels. PaintNuts now has a scalable framework for continued SEO growth, stronger market coverage, and more efficient acquisition.
